Being Purposefully Present
I could roll out all of my confessions right now on this topic! I really struggle with this, and I’ve known for a while that I’m not doing a very good job in this area of my life. My problem? The phone. I rarely watch t.v., but I’m on my phone a lot! Checking FB or InstaStories or Youtube videos and Podcasts. Ahh!
Have you noticed how enthralled children are by phones or devices? Even young toddlers. My youngest is 16 months old and anytime she sees a phone laying in her reach she charges for it. Those little legs can move quickly when she sees something she wants. 🙂 I can’t help but wonder if the fascination children have with phones has to do with the behavior we have modeled for them? They see us move from room to room with them. When they’re looking into our faces we are looking into the screen. When they ask us questions we either don’t respond or ask them to hold on. Those words hurt, right? They do for me, because I know I have been guilty of each and every one.
There’s nothing wrong with social media or watching tv. It’s good for everyone to be able to zone out sometimes. Yet I have to be honest and say that the biggest obstacle standing in my way of being purposefully present in my own life is my iPhone. My desire is to be a part of life’s little moments, to notice them, laugh with them. My eyes on them, and my heart and mind open and engaged. Why? I want those girls and my husband to know that they matter. They matter to me. I see them, and they have my time and my attention.
I’m not sure if this is something that you too struggle with. Perhaps the phone or tv or device isn’t your issue. Great! Let me know your secret! Either way, distraction comes in all forms. Cristine reveals some real issues with being distracted and the joys and blessing brought to us when we are being purposefully present.
Featured Post of the Week!
This Thanksgiving season and beyond, regardless of where you’re at on your personal pilgrimage on the planet, my plea is that you’d reunite with God’s perfect will to be purposefully present today! For, even in the darkest and most desolate of times, when we abide in the Lord, we discover His presence is paramount! Jesus’ sweet Spirit teaches us how to slow down and pause long enough to relish in the relationships around us. And subsequently, He surprises us with the simple things that were hidden in PLAIN SIGHT all along… like how a meaningful, romantic stare into our spouse’s eyes brings with it mutual endearment. Or when we secretly study our children’s features and expressions with delight, we receive immense joy into our hearts and smiles upon our faces. Or how about those times we show a fondness for a family member or friend’s stories? It often leads us to closer companionship with them! The point here is unmistakable: fully present equals fully gratified! When we are deliberate about resting in each other’s company with the intention to contribute towards someone else’s betterment, in return we can experience such merriment!
